Description

NGC 2419 is a globular cluster orbiting the Milky Way.  It is at a distance of about 300,000 light-years and is 127 light-years in diameter.  Due to the large distance from the Milky Way it was erroneously thought not to be in orbit around the Milky Way but just passing by.  Hence, the nickname "the Intergalactic Wanderer.  It takes 3 billion years to make one orbit of the Milky Way.  Intrinsically it is one of the brightest and most massive globular clusters of our galaxy being 900,000 times more massive than the Sun.  It appears faint because it is so far away.
